When most people think of patchwork quilts, they usually conjure up an image in their mind of a quilt made up of a number of different colours. While this is a typical style of patchwork quilt, its also a bit ‘old hat’.
That’s why we’re going to do something a little different today. Today we are going to choose just one colour to work with. If you think this is going to look boring, just wait until you see the result at the end.
The first step is to choose the colour. For this, you will want to have a look at the room in which this quilt will be used. You want to pick a colour that will fit in with the rest of the room. If the room is mainly blues, don’t make an Orange quilt, it just won’t fit quite right. Choose a colour that either matches or complements the other colours in the room.
Your next step is to then find a number of materials of the same colour to use in your quilt. Make sure they are different shades of that colour. The more varied the shades the more profound the effect. If you don’t have enough of the same colour, buy a number of same colour materials from a craft store, but be sure not to get too close to the shades of each one, the idea here is to contrast, not blend.
The last step is to design your pattern. In this part, you’ll want to cut out some squares of each colour and stack them in the pattern you’d like. Be sure to check that the colours next to each other aren’t too close in shade, otherwise it may appear that they are blending together, creating a doubling up in the middle of your pattern.
You are now ready to start sewing. When you are done, I guarantee you will love the result.
Good luck and happy quilting!
